Sam Martin - April 2018
Is a self taught artist who loves being in the great outdoors. She walks every day and this is where the inspiration for most of her work comes from. Through her love of the countryside and walking, shee sees the landscape in blocks of colour and this is reflected in her paintings. Sams work is exhibited in galleries throughout the UK. Some of her recent work has been for ITV’s Emmerdale village, and to paint a full wall mural for Elterwater hostel in the Lake District. Sam has also been lucky enough to paint a lifesize Herdwick Ewe and lamb for the Go Herdwick art trail for the Calvert Trust in the Lake District. Sam lives in North Yorkshire with her husband, 2 children and border collie. Sams favourite place is the Lake District, Cumbria, so many of her paintings are from the summits of fells.
Jayne is an agricultur
A graduate of the University of Cumbria with a Foundation Degree in Drawing, Jayne sketches from life, finding observation of the animals in their natural environment essential to the quality of her work, combined with larger scale studio creations. Her style is unique and impressionistic with a bold, flowing line capturing the essence of the subject.
Jayne says she's thrilled to be exhibiting in such a lovely venue as Eskdale and we hope you enjoy seeing her work in the Hardknott Bar & Cafe.
Based in the Lake District for the past 20 years, the wild landscape has inspired me to paint, carve and sculpt. These different forms of expression have come together with a fascination for the medium of bark which invites the unification of colour, form and texture.
Traditions of working with bark exist all around the world and in my work, symbols from diverse cultures can be juxtaposed against those from nature and against personal symbols. A personal reservoir of graphics and devices have been instilled in me from art education, from childhood, from work as an archaeologist and collecting imagery from travels in Africa, South East Asia, India, Central America and Europe.
Of course, there are a lot more artists based in and around Eskdale and the Lake District in general so have a bit more of a dig for them. With such picturesque surroundings, it's hard not to want to capture the moment in some way be it by photograph or with water colours and oils.
Artwork inspired by the natural world, Directly observed sketches, wherever possible, create a starting point with photographs used for reference material. Jenni has recently completed a Go Herdwick Sheep for the Calvert Trust Go Herdwick Public Art Trail - you can find out more about Go Herdwick HERE.

Jo is based at the famous Yew Tree Farm in Coniston where she's surrounded by constant inspiration for her drawings and paintings! Yew Tree Farm was once owned by Beatrix Potter, and she loves the idea that she's following in her footsteps, specialising in the character of our domestic and wild cumbrian animals.
Jo has a life long passion for capturing the spirit and nature of the animals we share our lives and our countryside with, especially Cumbria. We hope you enjoy looking at her work as much as she enjoys making it!
