The Woolpack Inn has been announced as a finalist for the Taste Cumbria Award in the 2012 Cumbria Tourism Awards. Finalists have to demonstrate a commitment to using and promoting locally produced food and drink and the judges have recognised the Woolpack Inn ethos for using the best produce from the farms and fells around us, as well as a few of our favourites from other parts of Cumbria. The winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony in late May.

There’s lots more information about the local food and drink we serve here at the Woolpack along with sample menus on our web pages:

We’ll be displaying a beautiful four tier cake from William and Kate’s Royal Wedding at the Woolpack Inn this weekend in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance. The cake will arrive on Friday 23rd September and will be displayed on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th September.

The cake, which took 300 hours to make, was donated by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, to the charity Centrepoint following their marriage. They placed the cake on Ebay where it was ‘won’ by local woman Alexandra Sharpe, from Blennerhasset. Alexandra, who is is displaying the cake around the county to raise money for charity, contacted Harry Berger, our owner, after hearing about his own fund raising efforts.

Harry was badly injured by Derrick Bird a year last June during the West Cumbria shootings tragedy, and in recognition of the helicopter crew who saved his life, he has set himself the daunting task of raising £5,000 for the Great North Air Ambulance. On the weekend of 23rd and 24th September, Harry will be climbing all four of the Lake District’s 3000 feet plus mountain peaks in just 3 days.

And, because conquering Skiddaw, Helvellyn, Scafell Pike and Scafell isn’t challenging enough, Harry has also just run his first competitive 10 km race and on 2nd October will complete the Great Cumbrian Run, Carlisle’s half marathon road race.

The Royal Wedding Cake display will also mark the launch of the Woolpack’s new restaurant, which opens on Saturday 24th September – in support of the Taste Cumbria Food Festival. The cake will be displayed in the restaurant all evening for first time diners to enjoy.

Charitable donations can be made through Harry’s page on Just Giving – www.justgiving.com/Harry-Berger.
